Welcome
Nestled in the heart of Brooklyn, Shinshokan is a traditional dojo dedicated to the study of Japanese martial arts. In a city that moves at a relentless pace, Shinshokan offers a space for focus, tradition, and mindful practice. We are passionate about sharing the deep-rooted teachings of budo while remaining open, friendly, and inclusive to all who are eager to discover this rich world.
Guided by Salet Sensei (6th Dan in kendo), our dojo maintains close ties with Okada Sensei and Shodokan Dojo in Tokyo, from which our traditional budo teachings originate. At Shinshokan, we do not chase trophies. We train to forge the body and spirit. We sweat, laugh, and grow together—because budo is not just about fighting, it is about personal growth.
Whether you are drawn to the thunderous rhythm of kendo matches, the silent elegance of iaido, or the historical depth of kenjutsu, you will find here a community that honors discipline, respect, and self-improvement.
“Kendo is a way to discipline the human character through application of the principles of the katana.”
